What the hell had just happened?

Damon sat at the bar in Junonia, the upscale restaurant empty except for a few late night diners. He was on his second shot of whisky, contemplating a third.

Seeing Rainey’s prosthesis had been like finishing first in the Boston Marathon, only to discover you’d shown up on the wrong date.

In the two hours they’d spent together, without knowing anything about her, he sensed a connection, an attraction that appeared to be mutual. Gorgeous and sexy as hell, Rainey came across as smart, strong and sassy. He’d also seen tantalizing glimpses of vulnerability and passion, an interesting combination, he’d mused, especially in the bedroom.

He’d taken advantage of any excuse to touch her, to brush against her, to inch their chairs closer together. When the kickoff celebration finally ended, he imagined walking beside her on the dimly lit path, anticipation building in both of them until they arrived at her villa and he finally had a chance to kiss her.

And the whole time she’d been hiding her secret under the table.

He muttered a four-letter expletive under his breath.

What the hell was he supposed to do now?

Ignore it? Pretend it didn’t exist? She probably needed all kinds of accommodations for her…thing.

He felt guilty for feeling resentful, but damn. You didn’t just spring something like that on people without warning them.

And what if she had? A snarky voice in his head demanded an answer. An honest answer.

Would you have backed out of the show?

Would you have made excuses to avoid confronting her?

Would you have been a no-show?

He wanted to deny considering any of those actions, but he couldn’t lie to himself. If he’d known ahead of time that Rainey was an amp—hell, he couldn’t even say the word without feeling like a dick—was missing a leg, he would have bailed.

It wasn’t very admirable, but there it was.

He didn’t know anyone who used a prosthesis, and even photos of amputees’—was the right word “stump” or was there another, better, more tactful word?—scars made him uncomfortable.

Since discovering Rainey’s secret, he couldn’t stop thinking of her as anything but an amputee.

Damn. He really liked her. Had liked her. Did like her?

Tossing back the rest of his drink, he signaled the waiter for another.

A couple slid onto the seats next to him, and he glanced over, grateful for the distraction.

“Hi, you’re Damon Drake, right?” The slender blonde extended a hand. “I’m Gussie DeMille and this is my husband Tom. I work at the resort as a wedding consultant for Barefoot Brides.”

The three shook hands then settled back with their drinks.

Tom curved an arm around his wife’s shoulders, idly toying with a strand of hair. They carried most of the conversation, filling in details about the resort, the island and its more colorful characters.

As Gussie turned to ask the bartender for a napkin, Tom brushed her hair behind one ear, revealing a bald patch of scar tissue. Damon quickly averted his eyes, not wanting to offend another person by reacting poorly to their disfigurement.

“I need to get back to the house,” Tom said a few minutes later.
